Kevin Marlborough Carrowgar, Quin

Yvonne Gallagher had the pleasure of interviewing Kevin Marlborough who shared his early memories of living in Quin.

Kevin was born in Barefield but moved to the house beside the bridge in Quin Village.  He later took a job in the radio station in Ballygirreen and moved to  Carrowgar with his uncle and aunt in the house where his grandfather once lived.

In this clip he tells us that Quin was very progressive in the 1950’s. In fact it was one of the first parish’s to get electricity in 1949 and one of the very few to have its own parochial hall.

Kevin describes the incredible work done by his uncle John Thady Clune and others to get a turbine up and running in the 1930’s. His remarkable uncle, endowed with a gifted engineering brain also managed to build his own car, television and wind turbine.

In this clip Kevin recounts local Stories of the Black and Tans that he heard from his parents and neighbours.

The memories, though emotionally evocative and chilling, serve to remind us how profoundly it affected all areas of life for the locals.
