Population Changes in our Townlands

Much information can be gleaned from the townland data set out below. In this table of numbers, we can see the impact of the Great Famine after 1841. We can also see the effects of emigration, changing agricultural practices, townland clearances and urbanisation. Each townland was impacted in a different way to its neighbours. The most striking feature of these raw numbers is the size of the population of 1841 in this small parish. The change in population in less than one hundred years deserves further analysis and research.

Quin Town is comprised of Quin townland and parts of Quin Gardens, Quinville South, Feaghquin. Figures for Quin townland and Quinville South were integrated into those for Quin Town after 1841. Population figures for Feaghquin and Quin Gardens were not integrated in the same way, hence the seperation of Quin Town in the above table.

This data can offer a basis for research or the study of local history by our schools. It may inspire someone in the future to delve much further into the life of the people of Quin in the last eventful century.
