Who we are
A volunteer group creating a historical archive of Quin and surrounding areas
We are a small group of history enthusiasts living in Quin. The group welcomes new members and is open to non-academics and academics alike. It is intended to be apolitical and open to everyone who enjoys heritage or history.
The Quin Heritage Group was founded in May 2021 to promote awareness for Quin’s historical surroundings and preserve as much information as we can into an archive.
Committee
The present committee is as follows: Michael Houlihan, Yvonne Gallagher, Siobhan O’Sullivan, Michael Daffy, Ann McNamara, Mick Maguire and Joe O’Connor.
Completed Projects
We have been involved in two major projects.
The first was to produce a 30 minute video on some of our well known and lesser well known sites for submission to the Heritage Week event organised by the Heritage Council – click here to see submitted project.
The second involved the publishing of a heritage audit including a number of our historical and archaelogical assets. Click here for report and more information.
Other acomplishments:
On-going engagement with the local school children in historical research into their townlands and the 1930’s Dúchas Folklore Schools Collection.
Promoted an awareness of the importance of Daingean Uí Bhigín and local ringforts.
Production and publication of ‘A Historical & Archaeological Trail around Quin’ map in 2024
In partnership with other interested parties, we have helped to record and digitize the headstones in the two village grave yards.
Creating a narrated video of the history of Quin Friary and archaelogical features which is part funded by the Creative Ireland Project Award 2022 scheme.
Current Projects
Ongoing updates to the content of the quinheritage.ie website.
Interviews with elderly members of the community providing many insights into the lives of those living in Quin, Clooney and Maghera in times gone by.
Planning for improvements to the access and potential of Quin Abbey which involves improved signage, improved access and other key services for visitors.
We are partnering with others to have Magh Adhair adopted by the National Monument Service with improved access and signage provided.

We need help from the Community in order to populate the archive. Can you help:

- Making comments about articles on the website.
- Letting us record your memories of the locality
- Lending us your photographs and documents to make digital copies.
If you do not wish your photographs and documents to be out removed from your sight, then we can visit you and use our scanner to copy them.
